Wow, I just watched Seirei NO Moribito episode 8. Almost the whole episode featured the weapon smith's house. They talked about Balsa's past as well.
Balsa was the daughter of probably a high ranking palace official in her country. For some reason one day she was chased. Her parents entrusted her to the care of a stranger, who took her away. The court ordered the stranger's close friends to pursue him as assassins, their families lives on the line. In order to protect Balsa, her bodyguard killed them off 1 by 1. Till his death, he regretted his actions...
Being the one who forged the blade which killed 9 friends, the weapon smith felt the guilt. He resolved to create the ultimate weapon used to protect lives of the charge as well as the pursuers. A noble goal.
Now I can understand why Balsa protects the prince with deathly conviction. Even when mortally wounded she continued fending off her assailants , and despite that desperately tried not to kill them.
