the sky queen and the fish
I'm writhing in agony. Sharp talons pierce my slippery sides, and blood warmed by the blazing sun gushes out of the wounds. A hundred metres of sky separate me from ground. I gaze longingly at my home. A home i was brutally snatched from. Misty clouds give way to scenic views of perilous peaks as the mother nears the nest. She lets out a triumphant battle cry. The chicks instantly recognise their mother's tell-tale screech: feared by most land dwellers, but embraced by them. Naked, and hungry after slumber, they cry out in anticipation of the meal which will fill them, bringing with it warmth, satisfaction and security... Pictures of Land and Nest (a weird combination i know) intermittently flashed in my mind, leaving me unsure of which destination I preferred. Falling a hundred metres to die on an expanse I was familiar with, or being devoured voraciously by hungry offspring of the Sky Queen... The ending is an anti-climax. The skyqueen let me go (she was mad). And as I fell, I didn't get swopped by another hungry bird, or splatter into a puddle of blood on a dry sandy plot. I fell into a delta which led to the sea. Free at last, for a fish was I, and liberate as one I was.
