yesterdae had novices. i had not been training for long time, and was under corticosteroids due to my hand injury, but i competed anw because the tournament meant a lot to me. i got a bronze, but i learnt a lot from this tournament, and it felt better than winning a gold. i got a relatively uneventful pool la, but i had not been training for ages and i lost the first 3 bouts. i was damn worried, coz about 40% of the participants will be eliminated, and thankfully i won the nxt 2 bouts 5-3 and 5-1. it was the start of a magnificent tournament run, and i JUST managed to squeeze into the knockout phase, by 2 touches. close. anw i think top 36 seeds progressed, but the bottom 8 had to fence. As the 34th seed i had to fence the 31st seed and I won that one easily, but after that i faced cephus, the 2nd seed. i know seedings dun reeli say much about an opponent but it still scared me,especially since he had seen me fence, so i psycho-ed myself ( for the first time in competition), using techniques weewee taught me and i managed to proceed to the round of 16 with a 15-10 win. the round of 16 i met this rj guy, and i rem fencing other defensive fencers, who kept taking points off me when i tried to attack. i had a sense of deja vu but hung on for an impt 6-5 victory, with my 3 point lead being cut to 1 by the end of that match. the nxt match was even worst. i fought this ex air force guy melvyn, and i only knew about him what my friends told me, so he was something of an unknown quantity. i was getting tired by then, and my stomach was burning furiously, from what i dunno. i will hafto check it out, coz i din eat a lot anw. and i was tired la. towards the end of the match, i surrendered a 5 pt leasd for the score to be tied 14-14. the nxt point would decide the leader. i was groggy and tired and everytihng was hanging by a thread. i could hear anxious chattering from the crowd and my coach scolding me stuff, although the only thing i captured was "WAKE UP HONG MUN!" i realised i had been in this situation many times before, and i decided to do sumthin about it. i spied an opening, and with the last ounces of my energy i fleched at the right side of melvyn, and my light lit up, to numerous cheers and relieved sighs from the crowd. i tossed my helm off in ecstacy before my coach came over for a post match repremanding and i kept reiterating i was damn tired. 5 mins later i had to go for the semis. my body gave way then. i had 3 trigger fingers and a calf cramp which refused to contract each time i lunged, so even with a spirited fightback towards the end, a victory was never on the cards. i lost 12-15. still i realise that in tournaments the skill levels of the top competitors are very identical. tactics, experiences and most importantly strong will power are the most important keys to succeed.
